Managerial Problems in Private Radio Broadcast Stations: A Study of Alheri Radio, Kaduna

Abstract

This study investigates the challenges of managing private radio broadcast stations in Nigeria using Alheri radio, Quantitative survey research method using questionnaire was adopted to sample the views of staff regarding challenges they face at work. Simple random sampling was used to select a sample size of 21 from the total population of 105. Findings from this study show that managerial challenges like direct censorship (restricting information flows to the public); coercion of editorial staff, withholding of budget as well as poor equipment affect private broadcasting in Nigeria. The study concludes that the Alheri private radio station faces a lot of managerial challenges. The study, therefore, recommends that private radio stations should make efforts towards improving their operations to tackle the identified challenges in this study.
